STORY #73

Name: Megan Diekhoff
Description: small, white and red striped

This paperclip was a gift to me after a long week of band camp. Every year the staff gives out "poker chip awards" which are fun little pieces of recognition for hard work throughout the camp. Most of the awards are pretty silly and create memories about the funny things that happen while away at St. Mary of the Woods College for part of the summer. Then there are also a few serious awards to congratulate the best marchers. I am ver...

The following is from a few minutes in a vehicle on a paved road (a rarity) around Freetown.  I'd look up, write what I saw, look up, write, repeat.  Here's a glimpse: graveyard with weeds higher than the markers & flowers sprinkled among them.  People using the gravestones as a place to rest.  Trash lining the streets.  Sewage filled gutters.  People washing their clothes in side gutters.  Huge cart on the road filled with scr...

Glimpses of My African Adventure

Here's to the women with babies slung on their backs, pounding shells off of rice for hours at a time, everyday since they could hold a stick.  Here's to hitching a ride in the backseat of a wrecker truck for (what was supposed to e 2 hrs) FIVE hours to see the diamond mines of Kono that financed the rebel's side of the civil war.  FIVE hours that was the bumpiest, dirt, puddle-filled, fractured road I've ever been on th...

There is something to be said
For "kinda" planning a trip
"Kinda" planning leaves room
For the unexpected whims
For the "What the ****" moments
And the compulsion to change course
It leaves room to talk to people
For longer (or shorter) than you expected
It leaves room for you to stare
IN AWE
At what your eyes behold
To listen a little longer to what
Has captured your ears w/ both hands
To do something twice
Because it was just that amazing
Or because you missed some...

STORY #66 & 67

Name: Megan
Description: 2 small silver clips found in parking lot

Every day at work I paperclip orders from customers together. Each time I slide one onto a bundle of paper I think about how paperclips hold the office environment together.  I don't think offices around America would necessarily fall apart without these small shimmering inventions, but I know that life would be a lot less organized and slightly more chaotic.

While making my way back into the building after a relaxing lunch bre...
