Mission Trip
2013
2013
June 27- Bus breaks down. New idea of transportation is needed immediately!
June 28- I Get FACE BOOK!!!!!! :) LOL
June 28 or 29- Get volunteers going on trip and others to help us get down to Nashville!
June 30- We set out, heading for Nashville in approximately ten vehicles. One vehicle, a van, is very touchy with the ability to fume at any time. We stop at a stopping point eat lunch. At 2:00 (Nashville Time) we arrive at Fr. Ryan's High School. We are ready for CHWC (Catholic Heart Work Camp). We unpack our air mattresses and get antsy. Marissa, Trista, ,and I find a map and go exploring finding showers, the cafeteria, and auditorium. Luckily we get back in time to go to the opening program. We meet our groups. I'm group number 38. There are six others in my group. Don't know them very well, but I am very excited to get to know all of them after a series of icebreakers and rules. Afterwards, everyone goes to mass. :)
July 1- Wake up go to morning program which is also daily mass. We met Father Kevin from Valparaiso, Indiana. He gave us the cheer: P-A-R-T-Y" Party hard with JESUS CHRIST! (Crowd Repeats) I said, P-A-R-T-Y! Party Hard with JESUS CHRIST!! (Crowd Repeats) .... And there is a lot more fun with it!!! Father Kevin was a cheerleader at the University of Evansville. He was in the same class as Father Godfry. Day 1 of work for everyone. My group went to the Martin Center of Nashville, which we later discovered was a recreational center for people ages 50 or older. The girls in the group including me, trans "Planted" several things of monkey grass. It was a lot of work. We had to first hack the ground and kill the weeds and then dig the holes for the plants while simultaneously planting monkey grass. Lastly we had t fill the remaining space with mulch. Later the same day, we were al exhausted and ready to go back to camp. We had dinner which was a type of BBQ chicken, Mac and cheese (I bravely ate it...still not sure if I liked it), and very strange looking green beans. Closing program included the Carpenter Commandos, a cool dance, a witness, videos and music from the one and only PJ Anderson!
July 2- Continued morning Routine along with Father Kevin's cheers!!!! We all love going to mass! Meet up with group 38 again!!! (pause from agenda...I'm going to tell you about my group)
Becca- Going Temple university to study music. She can maintain a scholar ship if she keeps up her 3.5 or better. Was a diver and a gymnast (competed in both). She is very open to people but had a difficult time understanding stereotypes in the world. She is very down to earth. From Connecticut.
Jaci-She went to a school with only 70 kids per class, so Southridge wasn't the smallest school there! She didn't mind bugs. She found them fascinating and didn't mind getting dirty. From Illinois.
Luke- VERY intelligent....Or at least spoke intelligently. Also, he got a perfect score on the writing portion of the SAT. He ran in a marathon. Enjoys outdoor activities and very good at power washing. He plays video games in the winter. From Pennsylvania.
Evan- very similar to Evan Lange...except for dark hair and height. He is very direct and will tell you how it is. Knows a lot about tools and what not. Used to play three sports. From Indiana.
Fransisco- He was the one who always came to tell you ten minutes until break or ten minutes until lunch. He was the team leader. He worked hard, but was always ready to be done. He was funny. This fall he will be attending the University of Georgia. From Georgia.
Dominique- Lived in Haiti for 25 hears. Adult leader in our group. Speaks native language, French, and English (Trilingual!) Worked the hardest in the group. Has two kids, one of which also came on the mission trip. We began painting the fence that we sanded yesterday. Got half of it done ;( Decide that one coat of paint was enough! LOL TACO TUESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eat lots of TACOS!!!!!!!!!! Buy new Taco Tuesday shirt!!!! Go to evening program and do similar activities.
July 3- Morning routine with Father Kevin!!! Meet up with group! Finish painting Front Fence!!! Help with back fence for remaining time. Take a few pictures and find paper clip. Group looks at me funny when I put found paper clip in my bag. Eat pasta for dinner!!! Go pasta!!!! :D Go to evening program :D
July 4- Happy Independence Day!!! It's Free day! We go to Nashville Shores, hoping it's closed due to all the rain!!! It's not, so we suffer through the cold rain in the water park...and later decide to change and hangout under a picnic table. It finally closes and we get a refund!!!!!!!!! We meet the rest of our group at another place. April, Mckayla, Trista and I take a mini nap. We later go to a mall in Nashville. We got to Starbucks. Then, we join up with the rest of the gang in the food court and decide to FLASH MOB!!!!!! Afterwards we all eat at Buca's Italian place. It was like the Log In, except with PASTA!!!!!!!!! Slowly we arrive back to the high school where we play cards. Phillip Olinger stabbed me with his finger in ERS!!!!!!! Don't worry, totally forgiven!!! Go to bed.
July 5- Last day :( Daily mass with Father Kevin is dedicated to everyone who took up their time this week to serve for Christ. We are all said to see the cheerleading priest say his last mass for all of us. ;( It is our last day to work. WE are scrambling to get the rest of our railing painted!!! It begins to rain and washes the wet paint off!! AHHH!!!! Panicked! We clean up our mess and go inside to eat lunch while it is down pouring!!! Also, the director of the place has us watch a movie about the Martin Center. There is a Wine Sipping club and a Wine Sipping with Art club. There is a Men's group. There are all kinds of things for the old people to do!!!!! It was crazy. Also, the director gave us a goody bag with a taste of Tennessee: Moon Pies, GooGoos, and hard candy. There was also a notebook and agenda thing in there. On the front was a Greek word that meant enjoyment while working for others which was what we were doing. All of us were grateful! The Rain had let up. We were going to get the rest of the fencing done!!!! We asked for 30 minutes and God gave us 45 to finish and clean up that fencing!!! It was done!!!! We were done! We had finished our task!!!! The Martin Center was very thankful. We all knew we were going to miss one another so we exchanged ways to contact one another. Luckily I had gotten Face Book the Saturday Before!!!
We had a program for our Residents to come see what we had done. It was a nice ceremony where the Residents talked about what we had done for them. They were all so happy!!!!
Later, we had a final send of program for us campers. Happy Trails was played and we exited the Auditorium for the final time. We went to the cafeteria and had our last round of cards. This was the final night of CHWC.
July 6- 10 people wake up at 5:30 and leave. The rest wake up at 6:00 am. We pack our air mattresses, sweep the floor, and place chairs and desks into our room. By 7:05 we are all boarded into vehicles and headed home. An hour later we stop at McDonalds to eat breakfast. Following that up, we drive continually until alas we arrive home at noon!!!!!! Back Hone in INDIANA!!!! My home sweet home!!!!! Also, we go to mass at home and say "AMEN" loudly, even tough we all knew Father Kevin would have been disappointed with our effort...until the end. We're all excited to go back!!!!
July 7- relaxation day/ get back into routine day!!! Sleep in until whenever. Face Book Everyone!!!!
