Name: April Fleck
Description of clip: Pink with a blue ink smudge
"They say when a snake bites you, you're supposed to suck the poison out. I knew that's what I had to do. I had to suck Regina George and all the poison from my life." -Mean Girls
This pink paperclip's story is the story of a goodbye four years in the making. Once, long before I received my paperclip, I fell in love. He was handsome, smart, and oh so sweet. For the purpose of this story, let's call him Mister. He wanted me, he put in a lot of effort--at first. He took me out, bought me candy and jewelry. And predictably, I swooned. Mister was a little possessive, which didn't bode well with my free spirit. But he was so sweet, I could forgive that controlling characteristic, right? It's not a big deal, or that's what I told myself.
--When you have to tell yourself it's not a big deal, it usually is.--
Mister and I quickly became one of those on-again-off-again couples. We disagreed on almost everything. We would get into hasty fights and "break up," then take it all back. It doesn't matter how much you take something back, the memories remain. To this day, I remember the terrible names he called me years back. Sometimes I was afraid of him. When he was angry, he was unpredictable. His eyes would go snakelike and cold. In a flash though, he was back. Saying "I'm sorry, I still love you." I forgave him every time. He was not a real threat, but it is still degrading to be a target of intimidation. And I let it go on for far too long.
It is the tenth day of December in 2012. Today, it is cloudy and overcast. Today I take my paperclip out for its last hoorah. It's taken me this long to accept that as much as I may care about Mister, we are not right for each other. Relationships are supposed to make you happy and I'm not. It doesn't mean that mister or I are bad people. Just that we're bad for each other.
Goodbyes are not easy; they are often excruciating. But when a snake (or an unhealthy relationship) bites, you've got to suck the poison out before it stops your heart. Sometimes, with the help of a little piece of pink plastic, goodbye is the best thing you can do.
